It's a New Day to Change Your Life!

"For the past 33 years, I looked in the mirror and asked myself, 'If today were the last day of my life, would I do what I'm about to do today?' And whenever the answer has been 'No' for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something." ~ Steve Jobs

Is there something in your life that you are not happy with? Something you know you need to change?

Sometimes we endure deep dissatisfaction and frustration in our lives because we keep doing what we have always been doing.  I like these 3 simple rules in life:

1. If you do not go after what you want, you'll never have it.
2. If you do not ask, the answer will always be "No."
3. If you do not step forward, you will always be in the same place.

If we take an active role in making positive changes in our lives, things can change is very positive ways.  Our relationships can be harmonious.  We can discover job satisfaction.  We can overcome bad habits and addictions.  We can have improved health and vitality.  We can experience true joy and inner peace.

I encourage you to go after what you want today.  Do your part.  Make a decision that things are going to change for the better.  You can do it!  Step out in faith. Ask, seek, knock... Do what it takes right now.  Step forward today.  See yourself achieving your goals.  Decide that you will not remain in the same place, and that you are going up higher.  It all begins with a choice, a decision.  You can do it!

Take the first step today to improve and change your life!

We can help.  At New Day Counseling, we offer relationship and couples counseling, parenting classes, addiction counseling, anger management groups,  career and transition counseling, individual counseling and much more,  Go to http://newdaycounseling.org for more information.  Today can be a new day for a new season of healing, wholeness, and blessings in your life!

Open your eyes, look within. Are you satisfied with the life you're living? ~Bob Marley
Change is inevitable. Progress is optional. ~Tony Robbins
Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything. ~George Bernard Shaw

Human beings, by changing the inner attitudes of their minds, can change the outer aspects of their lives ~William James

The loss may be permanent, but it doesn't have to affect us permanently. We can accept what we cannot change and grow stronger.

How to Win in Life & Be Your Best

What is opportunity, and when does it knock? It never knocks. You can wait a whole lifetime, listening and hoping, and you will hear no knocking. None at all. You are opportunity, and you must knock on the door leading to your destiny. You prepare yourself to recognize opportunity, to pursue and seize opportunity as you develop the strength of your personality and build a self-image with which you are able to live. ~Maxwell Maltz

Sometimes people wait their entire lives for the right doors to open for them. They wait passively hoping and wishing something will change. Out of the blue, things will turn around for them. They are good people. They deserve it. Maybe they had some bad breaks, but some day good fortune might suddenly fall into their laps. They just might get lucky, but until then their choices and inaction keep them in a discontented place. They wish they could have the success that others have. They can only imagine how nice it must be to have the opportunities others have. Very rarely, however, do they consider the cost of hard work, strong faith, determination, and persistance.

Most people who are successful in life have paid their dues. I am talking about truly successful people, not those who have things handed to them and do very little with their opportunities. Although there is nothing wrong with someone getting a good break because of a connection, that person will only experience the rewards of success when validated for their own efforts, investment, and talent. Until then, they may not feel genuinely successful or thankful regardless of how they appear to others.  The rewards and self-confidence that come from growing, giving, and fulfilling your destiny can't be handed to you.  True fulfillment and joy come from taking opportunities to be your best and live with purpose.

The good news is that we do not have to wait for opportunity to knock. We can recognize opportunity, pursue it, and seize it. We can start knocking on doors right now. We can take steps to move forward, change, improve, and fulfill our destiny. We can develop and practice successful habits today!! What are you waiting for?

Making Peace with Your Past & Finding Freedom

The day the child realizes that all adults are imperfect he becomes an adolescent; the day he forgives them, he becomes an adult; the day he forgives himself he becomes wise. ~Alden Nowlan

Are regrets, bad memories, or losses keeping you from enjoying each new day? Is the past keeping you from moving into the future with hope and anticipation?

I recently heard a man say that it was not until he made peace with his past that he truly began to live. It changed his life so drastically that everyone noticed there was something different about him. It was not until 20 years after losing his father that he began to grieve the loss for the first time. He finally allowed himself to face his past with all the anger and pain. There was so much that he missed out on. There were lost opportunities and things that would never be, so many regrets, poor choices, and bad experiences that would affect the rest of his life.

This man went through a process of acceptance and forgiveness. He felt the pain. He felt the anger. He mourned what was and could have been. And then, he released it. He made peace with his past, and he was ready to move on with his life. Suddenly, new opportunities before him became exciting. He began to fully appreciate what he had, the people in his life, and what he had become. He began to hope for a better and brighter future. He was ready to give more of himself to others. And he began to enjoy his life more and more.

For the first time since he could remember, he felt free—free of burdens from the past, free of unresolved pain, free of bitterness and self-pity. He was free indeed! He was free to enjoy his life, his family, and all that he had like never before. The past would no longer steal his joy and hope. It could not hold him back, and it was not going to keep him down any longer.

Is your past keeping you from fully enjoying your life? Sometimes we do not stop and think about it. Just like the man described above, we might have regrets, unresolved pain, sorrow, anger, or unforgiveness. These things keep us bound to the past. The past does not have to negatively influence our future. We can release it as we face it, deal with the emotions, come to accept what was and now is, and forgive our past.

Making peace with our past will lead us to experience healing, wholeness, and freedom to live our life with true joy. Every day is a new day to appreciate and enjoy. We do not have to allow our past to keep us from being truly happy today. Choose to be free and take the necessary steps to be free now. (We might want to have a professional counselor help us go through this process.)

Following are questions to reflect on and steps to take in making peace with our past:

1. Face your past. What are your regrets? What caused or still causes you pain? What are your losses? Have you grieved them?

2. Face your feelings. Does your past make you angry, sad, feel bad about yourself, bitter, damaged, cheated?

3. Forgive your past. Do you have any bitterness, hatred, or unforgiveness towards anyone (including yourself)? Why are you holding on to it? What would it take for you to release it and free yourself from its control in your life?

4. Accept your past. When we cannot change something, the healthiest thing we can do is accept it. Can you accept your past? What have you learned from it? How can it change you for the better?

5. Make peace with your past and be free. When your past no longer controls your life—your peace, your hope, attitude, relationships, ability to love others, give and share of yourself, dream, believe, and trust once again, then you are free!

It is my hope that this has helped you in making peace with your past, and in looking forward to better days ahead!

Krystal

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.

He who spends time regretting the past, loses the present and risks the future. ~Quevedo

Regret is an appalling waste of energy --you can't build on it. It's only good for wallowing in. ~Katherine Mansfield

Your memory replays your past; your imagination replays your future. ~Mike Murdock

An Empowering Way to Start a New Day

Words to Live By

The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own. No apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on, or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins. ~Bob Moawad

The Greatest Handicap - Fear
The Best Day - Today
Easiest Thing to Do - Find Fault
Most Useless Asset - Pride
The Greatest Mistake - Giving Up
The Greatest Stumbling Block - Egotism
The Greatest Comfort - Work Well Done
Most Disagreeable Person - The Complainer
Worst Bankruptcy - Loss of Enthusiasm
Best Teacher - One Who Makes You Want to Learn
Greatest Need - Common Sense
Meanest Feeling - Regret at Another's Success
Best Gift - Forgiveness
Greatest Knowledge - God
Greatest Thing in the World - Love
(from Jim Pierce's Big Golden Trumpet Encyclopedia)

I love words of wisdom and inspirational quotes because they are truly motivating and empowering. They can encourage, strengthen and direct us. I had the following words of wisdom in my music binder. On occasion I will stop and read through them. Today was one of those days. And as always, they really inspired me. I started my morning by saying that today is a good day, and I decided I was going to do my part to make it good. And in these words to live by, I was reminded that today is not just another day, it is the best day! Yes, it is the best day because we can choose to believe it is. We can choose to make it good by the way we think, behave, and relate to others and our world. We can choose to give thanks for what we have, what we can learn, and what we can give. We can choose to recognize and appreciate each new day as a gift and give thanks for all that is good. This attitude is truly the very best way to start our day. It empowers us to do our part to live life to the fullest.

I was also reminded that fear is the greatest handicap. It keeps us from maximizing our potential and being our best. It leads us to the greatest mistake of giving up. It can also cause us to become a complainer (the most disagreeable person) if we are not careful. Once we get into complaining, we are out of gratitude. Complaining and gratitude cannot coexist! And if we are not thankful, we will not experience true joy and peace. A lack of joy hampers our enthusiasm for life, for our relationships, work, etc. And a loss of enthusiasm is certainly the worst bankruptcy. The unfortunate thing is that we do it to ourselves.

Another value I thought was especially empowering is the best gift--forgiveness. I was reminded that this is a gift we give to ourselves. Forgiveness is more about us than it is about who or what hurt us or offended us. Not only do we forgive and find freedom, we also receive forgiveness and experience grace and love which are truly life-changing. Yes, forgiveness is the best gift! There is so much more I can say about this and maybe I will in a future article.

The greatest knowledge--I agree 100% is God. I believe there is no greater knowledge, experience, or relationship we can ever have. I couldn't even imagine life without God and for this I am most grateful! His love is the greatest thing in the world, for He is love. To know Him is to know love, an ongoing life experience. His love is like no other--it is so deep, so wonderful, so beautiful, so empowering.

May you be blessed by these words to live by and let them empower you to be your best and give thanks for today and always!

Nurturing Happy, Loving Relationships

We’ve got this gift of love, but love is like a precious plant. You can’t just accept it and leave it in the cupboard or just think it’s going to get on by itself. You’ve got to keep watering it. You’ve got to really look after it and nurture it. ~John Lennon

A special day is set aside every year to celebrate the gift of love. During this time we show our appreciation and love for that special someone in our life. We may think up some creative, romantic, and fun ways to express our love and show how much we really care. But celebrating the gift of love just one day or so each year is far from enough. Happy and loving relationships take quite a bit of attention and nurturing on a daily basis.

It is the simple things that show how important our relationships are to us and how much we care about them. We can say, “I love you” in so many ways, but do we do it often enough? We can spend more time together and make it a priority, but is it that important to us? We can do nice things for each other, but do we wait for a special occasion? We can show our appreciation and gratitude for the gift of love we are given, but do we quickly forget and begin taking one another for granted?

John Lennon’s quote above is a beautiful analogy and reminder that our relationships are valuable, and we are to take special care of them if they are to survive and prosper. The gift of love is like a precious plant. A precious plant has many needs like proper nourishment and plenty of light. It cannot be watered just once or twice a year. It needs to be watered often to keep it hydrated and healthy. In the same way, our loving relationships are precious. They require lots of special care and attention. They cannot be left to themselves in hopes that they will grow and prosper. Happy and loving relationships don’t just happen. They take plenty of nurturing.* As we celebrate the gift of love this year, may we remember that it is a precious gift that needs to be looked after every day and all year round. Happy Valentine’s Day!!

Life's greatest happiness is to be convinced we are loved. ~Victor Hugo

Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself. To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night. To wake at dawn with winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving. ~Kahlil Gibran

Gratitude: The Antidote for Toxic Emotions

You cannot be grateful and bitter.
You cannot be grateful and unhappy.
You cannot be grateful and without hope.
You cannot be grateful and unloving.
So just be grateful.
~author unknown

Are you experiencing some toxic emotions like anger, bitterness, irritability, hopelessness or depression? When negative emotions occupy much of our attention and drain our energy, they have become toxic. Something that is toxic is like poison; it causes harm and serious debilitation. Isn't that what anger and bitterness do? Like poison, they impair and destroy our ability to function at our best. They keep us chained to unforgiveness and self-destruction. How about hopelessness? Its toxicity saps our strength and makes us weak. Irritability is another toxin that steals our peace and harms our relationships.

When we experience toxic levels of negative emotions, we need to detox. That is, we need to counteract and remove their destructive effects. We may need to release some anger, process some hurt, change our perspective, recall our past victories, take some time away, or talk to someone who can help us. These are healthy coping techniques that can be very helpful in dealing with toxic emotions. However, what is especially helpful and probably the best antidote for toxic emotions is practicing gratitude. One of the best ways to do this is to get our minds off the problem and change our focus. Instead of thinking about how angry we are about what went wrong, we can give thanks for what went right or for what additional sorrows we escaped. Instead of focusing on the hopelessness of a situation and what we cannot change, we can give thanks for what we can change and the control we have over our thoughts and actions. We can be thankful that we have options and can choose to respond in a healthy manner.

Gratitude and toxic emotions cannot coexist. The next time you experience toxic emotions, counteract them with gratitude before they poison your mind, body and relationships. Toxic emotions may not always be completely eradicated from our lives, but their destructive effects can be!

In daily life we must see that it is not happiness that makes us grateful, but gratefulness that makes us happy. ~Brother David Steindl-Rast

The Key to a Peaceful Mind

Have patience with all things but first with yourself.  Never confuse your mistakes with your value as a human being.  You're a perfectly valuable, creative, worthwhile person simply because you exist.  And no amount of triumphs of tribulations can ever change that.  Unconditional self-acceptance is the core of a peaceful mind. ~St. Francis de Sales

I recall some great words of advice from a very wise man who was asked for some relationship help.  The discussion was about loving others and our expectations of them.  He addressed something especially important, and it is something most people often miss.  He said, "Instead of asking 'Do you love me?' we should be asking ourselves, 'Do I love me?'"  If I love me, then I can love you unconditionally and with healthy boundaries and expectations.

Loving ourselves enables us to love others.  A lack of self-love and self-acceptance makes it difficult for us to accept others unconditionally.  If we are critical of ourselves and our mistakes, we will be critical and unforgiving of others as well.  If we are impatient with ourselves, we are more likely to be impatient with others.

Not having appropriate self-love can also lead to dysfunctional relationship patterns such as expecting to get our needs met by other people such as our spouses, children, or friends.  Self-acceptance and healthy self-love helps us to have healthy boundaries and realistic expectations.

Remember,as quoted above, you are a perfectly valuable, lovable, beautiful, worthwhile person!  If you can believe it and unconditionally love and accept yourself, you will have a truly peaceful mind!

Having a low opinion of yourself is not "modesty". It's self-destruction. Holding your uniqueness in high regard is not "egotism". It's a necessary precondition to happiness and success. ~Bobbe Sommer

Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will spend its whole life believing that it is stupid. ~Albert Einstein

Always Do Your Best. Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse and regret. ~Don Miguel Ruiz

It's not your job to like me...it's MINE! ~Byron Katie

I was once afraid of people saying, "Who does she think she is?" Now I have the courage to stand and say, "This is who I am." ~Oprah Winfrey
